Note:"One of the first and most important comprehensive Western accounts of China. The lovely plates in this book illustrate a great variety of subjects in China and Asia: costume, geography, religion, natural history and language. This was one of the most popular of the renowned Jesuit Athanasius Kircher's works. Beyond the rich plates and scholarly text, the attention to language makes this quite an impressive specimen of typography. " Cf. Cordier, Sinica 26; Lust, Western books on China, n37.
This seems to be a pirate edition with an Antwerp address, printed the same year in Amsterdam by Johann Janssonius Waesberge. Most probably printed in Amsterdam and not in Antwerp. The address on the engraved title page is: Johannes Ianszonius Waesberge and widow of Elize, Weyerstraet
