Description:8vo, 341 (i.e. 337)-[1] ff, woodcut engraved border. Some marginal wormholes, mostly repaired, 2 holes repaired in final leaf with loss of letters. 19th c. brown morocco binding, gilt, ends of spine and hinges rubbed, all edges gilt, red title piece on spine
Note:Printed by one of the foremost Spanish printers, and publisher of Erasmus, the protestant Miguel de Eguía.
Provenance: Albert Ehrman, with his motto: pro viribus summis contendo. From the library of Sir David Dundas bequathed to Charles Howard (in pencil on flyleaf) Bibliotheca Mayansiana (Wheatley, 1829). Not found in auction records of the last 40 years (this copy sold by Sotheby's in November 1977). Not in Adams.
Álvar Gómez de Castro was born on 6 December 1515 in Santa Olalla, near Toledo, he was born into a converted Jewish family, his contemporaries named him "El Eulaliense" and praised his erudition. Nowadays this Spanish humanist is less well known and all his books are scarce. Only 1 copy in Worldcat
