Note: | Scarce and important gathering of documents and letters sent and issued by Charles V and Pope Clement VII to and toward one another in the events leading to the Sack of Rome (il Sacco di Roma) by Charles's troops in 1527. The letters of Charles V were actually written by Alfonso de VALD?S (c. 1490-1532) ; those of Clemens VII by J. Sadoleto, a liberal humanist educator and scholar. Alfonso de Vald?s was full of enthusiasm for the ideas of Erasmus, he considered the pope as a disturber of the public peace, an instigator of war, and a perfidious deceiver. Charles V took Alfonso de Vald?s under his protection against the Inquisition. Ref. Palau 44447 ; Adams C-1377 |
