Cutting (ca. 5 cm) most probably from a legal manuscript on parchment. Northern Italy, probably Bologna, late 13th or early 14th century.
Similar tiny figures set within initials or the margins can be found in copies of Justinian produced in Bologna in the last quarter of the 13th and the first quarter of the 14th. In a beautiful gilt frame (16 x 12 cm)
