The lovely plates in this book illustrate a great variety of subjects in China and Asia: costume, geography, religion, natural history and language. This was one of the most popular of the renowned Jesuit Athanasius Kircher's works. Beyond the rich plates and scholarly text, the attention to language makes this quite an impressive specimen of typography. " Cf. Cordier, Sinica 26; Lust, Western books on China, n°37.
