Description:In-folio oblong, engraved title and 102 plates : hunting of animals including elephants, lions, leopards, deer and wild cattle, ostriches, snakes and crocodiles, dragons, boars, foxes, wolves and dogs, rabbits, hares, porcupines, monkeys, whaling and fish spearing, pearl and coral diving, angling and falconry; weapons include cross and long bows, spears, guns, nets, lures, traps, &c. Engraved by Collaert, Mallery and Galle. Followed by: idem. Vermis Sericus. Series of 6 engraved plates (including title), showing silkworm breeding. Minor foxing, very attractive copy. 19th c. calf binding, blind tooled border, marbled edges
Note:From 1553-1571 Stradanus was employed by Cosimo de Medici, who commissioned him to make a series of lavish representations of hunting, fowling and fishing for the adornment of twenty rooms in the Palace of Peggio-a-Cajano. These are the designs so magnificently commemorated in the Venationes, blending well-tried renaissance hunting methods with fabulous subject matter drawn from Persia, India and the East.
