Description:3 vol. in-folio (39 x 26,5 cm), titles printed in red and black, etched and engraved vignettes on both title pages. Engravings in text. Volume 1: xxiv, CIII, [1] pp, with 208 etched plates numbered 1-208 on 67 leaves (60 double page, remainder full page), volume 2: [viii], 368, [2] pp, volume 3: supplement, consisting of five short works by various scholars (1773-1779). With engravings in text and 15 etched plates. A few tears repaired in the margins at the end of vol. 1. Slight (marginal foxing), but a desirable copy.

Note:Ref. Cicognara, 2506 ; Millard Coll. Italian, IV, n164; Brunet V, 1463. First edition of the splendid work. Winckelmann (1717-1768) regarded this work, as the culmination of his scholarly career. He was murdered in Trieste about a year after the publication of this important work. He is considered "The prophet and founding hero of modern archaeology"
