Note: | This is one of the maps of Bünting's "Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae" (Magdenburg, H. Bünting, 1581), in which the author, a theological commentator, rewrote the Bible as an illustrated travel book. This curious woodcut map of Europe in the form of a Queen shows Spain is the crown in acknowledgment of its dominance, France is the upper chest, Germany is the bosom, Italy is Europe's right arm, with Sicily being the globus cruciger, Denmark is the left arm of Europe, Bohemia is a circular area close to Europe's stomach. The British Isles are shown, but are not integrated into the figure. The Queen's skirt is composed of the Baltics and Greece; Turkey and Russia are beneath her feet.
