Description:In-4, [6] lvs (title, dedication, table of contents, introduction) + [71] lvs of text (in English and in French on verso). Illustrated with a frontispiece and 72 richly coloured aquatint plates numbered 1 to 70 (with two more engravings numbered 5* and 20*). Some marginal foxing. Contemporary binding: full leather, gilt ornamental border, blindstamped floral border, spine gilt, hinges repaired, marbled endleaves
Note:The first edition was published in 1803. Ref. Abbey Travel 246 ; Lipperheide 1342 ; Colas n 704: "The plates for this edition were copied from a series of engravings made for the work of J.W. Georgi, Beschreibung aller Nationen des russischen Reichs". Georgi was one of the savants drawn to Catherine the Great's Russian Enlightenment, and undertook the first scientific ethnographic study of Greater Russia, enquiring into the cultures of the Finns, Tatars, Samoyeds, Manchurians, Mongols and Cossacks
