Description:4to, [2] pp, pp. 3-240. Illustrated with 115 (from 125) copperplate emblems, from designs of Marcus GHEERAERTS. Gheeraerts based most of his motifs on woodcuts by Virgil Solis and Bernard Salomon but gave his subjects greater naturalism. Lacking engraved title, 3 lvs. of introduction, pages 1/2, 11/12, 45/46, 63/64, 209/210, 241/251. Old library stamp on free end paper (withdrawn). Foxing, pale water stains, tear with some text loss in lower corner of last leaf. Old calf binding, rebacked, corners bumped
Note:Sole edition. Ref. Landwehr 239 ; Voet II, 1214 ; Praz p. 341 "with copperplates of fables, the same as in Warachtige Fabulen by Edward de Dene (Bruges, 1567) and in Esbatement moral des animaux. Scarce". Voet: "To all probability, the publication was at the initiative (and at the costs) of Galle, who bought the plates, had the additional illustrations made in his studio, and printed them on his intaglio -presses. Plantin's contribution was limited to printing the typographical texts for the account of his colleague".
One of the rarest emblem books from the Low Countries: not in Adams, Machiels, Sorgeloos, STCV. Only two copies in WorldCat (EHC and MPM, Antwerp). It became so excessively rare that reproductions were issued in San Francisco in 1987
