Note:First edition of this description of the Pamphili obelisk in Piazza Navona in Rome, which was redesigned for Innocent X as a monument to his family. Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680) was probably the most learned Jesuit scholar ever, he displays in this book his impressive erudition by reconstructing the history of writing and obelisk-making since the beginning of time and by deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphics.
